I just read something that disturbed me, so I went and check to confirm with my own copy
Isayama seems to have said that Eren and Armin may not end up as good friends by the end. Or am I interpreting this wrong, please tell me I’m wrong! My Japanese is just that shitty right?
This is from an interview with Araki Tetsurou and Isayama Hajime from Official Guidebook Animation Side.
Correct translations or not I think it’s very probable. Some ‘inspirational’ things Armin said in previous chapters are super questionable in the long run.
YESYESYES. This is what I’ve been hoping for anyway; since that scene in which Armin and Mikasa sat on the wall, Eren’s just been taken away by the warriors, and they said something like they’re never together these times. I think this could’ve been immense foreshadowing, because both Armin and Mikasa don’t understand Eren at all. Levi gets Eren all the way, calling him a monster, because that’s what he is, and not because of his shifting abilities; even Erwin gets Eren more than his supposedly best friends, because he knows how to use him, and in the end, Eren wants to be used by Erwin and Levi to help humanity, even if he has to sacrifice himself - something Mikasa, for example, would never let happen in the first place because she’s so not supportive of Eren’s whole life goal. And Armin doesn’t even think about people’s drives or motivations anymore, turning into a cold strategist without room for anything else, which is against everything Eren stands for - Eren, who hesitated to kill Annie even after all she did to him and his squad. Because unlike Armin, Eren has guidance, a caretaker, who told him to make his own choices, but deal with the consequences… Although Eren is the biggest monster of them all, Levi somehow keeps him the most human human.
I thought about staying quiet over this but actually, fuck it.
I could have actually taken what you said in consideration if you hadn’t added your shipping needs to your commentary and tags, “MY SHIPPER HEART IS SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS #MY BROSHIPPER HEART SO SAD" (adding the last one bit only so none will get angry at me for only taking in consideration one thing of what was added to the tags; good for you, for broshipping eremin (from what I can tell), but to make it something completly about your OTP and disregard completly any character development between the Shinganshina Trio… That’s pretty unfair to the other characters.
Firstly, on Armin and Mikasa not understanding Eren at all: Wrong. Armin is shown to be one to greatly understand Eren, to tell when he seems worried and calming him (on top of the walls, when Mikasa was shown to have a broken rib), and he was able to get him out of his titan form in Trost because he knew of the dream they shared together, and what was it that got Eren out of the titan body? “Why did you want to see the outside world, Eren?” “Because I was born in this world.” Or some shit like that. Armin has a great deal of understanding of Eren’s personality and can tell many things about people (I mean, he managed to tell that Bertl had seemed to have a liking to Annie and used it to distract him while Erwin cut Eren off of him; why shouldn’t he be able to understand Eren, someone he knows for over five years?). And Mikasa too, while not as close to him, does understand Eren; I haven’t had much insight of their relationship, blaming myself for not having as much interest, but I know she does understand him. And goddamnit- Fuck, did you even pay attention to Mikasa’s arc at all? Eren was the one that fucking saved her life, from being sold and most likely raped later on, he was the one that gave her a new life and warmed her up when she was cold— Do you think she, knowing of her strenght and caring a lot about the one that saved her life, would give up easily on him? She respects Eren, and she is supportive of the life goal, to see the world outside the walls. Her meaning to get into the military however wasn’t exactly to see the world like him, but to protect him, because his fucking mom asked her to protect him, and we all know he would have been as good as dead if it weren’t for her and Armin. She only wants him to be alive, and she lets herself be selfish and not let him die so she may see him again— Fuck, she thought she lost him three times already, and he is still alive and with them— Do you think she really would just be like “oh haha lol ok go kill some titans eren i’ll wait here”?
"And Armin doesn’t even think about people’s drives or motivations anymore, turning into a cold strategist without room for anything else."
I, as an Armin Arlert roleplayer whom looks up to him, am greatly offended by this. If you support of Erwin “using Eren”, then you should also know that his entire thing is also basically “For a greater good, many must be sacrificed”, right? But back to Armin, he isn’t turning into a cold strategist with no room for anything else. He still wants to see the outside world, he wants to be with his friends— That is his drive, as well as Eren’s, is he disrespecting that? No. Do you think they all fucking like to be in the middle of all that mess, risking all those they hold dear, dealing with many forms of PTSD, and knowing they have to sacrifice people in order for humanity to move on? Armin, one of the smarterst out there, understands of the idea and accepts of it, because that’s the fucking truth to their world. Eren as well understands of the idea, but just like Armin, he does not like it one bit. None of them like the idea of sacrificing people for their greater good, but they entered the military knowing that— That they were going to sacrifice themselves for the sake of humanity, or did you forget that already too? Besides, take in fucking consideration what Armin has gone through too. He thought he lost his best friend, he too had to deal with people he considered friends and comrades actually being traitors, and not only Eren, he had to deal with an old man fucking touching him for their plan to succeed and that man even told him it was Armin’s fault he was like that and told him to take care of it, implying he had a boner of that, and just like Mikasa, had to deal with the supposed death and kidnapping of his best friend, whom had helped him out throughout his entire childhood and whom he looked up at, as the “ideal strong person”.
This is all I can tell as a reply, not counting the shippy things you said about how Levi is the only one that gets Eren, altogether with Erwin, because his friends whom know him for the most time are the ones that understand him truly. He might be taken as a monster for the superiors, but for those that he actually trusts and love the most, Armin and Mikasa, he is a human— their friend, someone not to fear and someone they trust, and not only a weapon to be used for the aid of humanity. His powers are of great help, but they don’t see him the least because he is a titan. Even still in trost, when they were going against the Garrison, it was mentioned they could run together and do something about it later, meaning they won’t give each other up so easily. I won’t go in details over Levi and Eren’s relationship because I do not give much of my time to it (although in moments like these, I do wish I would do so), and I fear I’d anger fans with all I know that is pretty much biased, but my reply to you is basically it.
All in all, please, for the love of fuckin’ Zeus, don’t completly disregard anything only for the sake of your ships. This series is not black and white and should not be taken only one side; think. And as for why Eren and Armin and Mikasa haven’t been as together as they were, my very own theory is because he is slowly forgetting of the dream to the outside world, and only thinking of killing the titans, adding to the betrayal of those he thought to be his friends.
